Beth has finally started getting numbers attached to draft or unofficial offers, so it looks like she'll have a job next year, which is comforting. There aren't yet enough details to know which look likely, but we're virtually certain to be in New York State next year, with Beth in a position which pays well enough that our rate of saving and/or standard of living is likely to improve. I may even buy my first car. Yes, I may well become constitutionally eligible for the presidency before I'll ever have purchased a car (not just a new car, mind you, any car--my parents and in-laws have been quite generous with hand-me-down vehicles).
It also recently occurred to me that one of my peculiar views of morality has a happy consequence. I tend to think it virtuous, not merely to fulfill one's duties, but to actively seek out burdens which the community needs borne and which you are well suited to bear. Since jobs are hard to come by and many experience unemployment as highly burdensome, I wonder whether I help by remaining out of the labor market. I would like to feel as though I'm contributing, but the alternative to employment is, for me, also fairly productive, and I expect I'll be better able to return to the world of work once it recovers than most would.
